Emmanuel OPC is an Evangelical, Reformed, and Presbyterian church of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (opc.org) within the regional church the Presbytery of the Dakotas (POD).

Evangelical means focused on the bona fide offer of the good news (gospel) of the grace of God to all people because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23).   Salvation and eternity in heaven are available to all who will repent unto life (Lk 13:3; 2 Cor 7:10) and believe in Jesus Christ (Rom 10:9) as the only Savior for all mankind (1 Tim 2:5).  While we vigorously pursue doing good works pleasing to God (Jas 2:20-26), we rest in the finished work of the resurrected and ascended to heaven Messiah (Mt 11:28-30).  We focus our worship and lives around bringing glory to the triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

Reformed indicates following the recovered doctrines of the church as espoused in the 16th Century Reformation in Europe.  These include the Doctrines of Grace (T.U.L.I.P.) and the Regulative Principle of Worship (RPW).  The OPC is in fraternal relations with other Reformed churches which can be found at the North American Presbyterian & Reformed Council (naparc.org).  We recognize in fellowship that there are many true believers of Jesus Christ whose doctrine and practice vary from our understanding and convictions of the Scriptures.

Presbyterian refers to how the church is ruled along with our Confessional adherence whose heritage is the Scottish Reformed Church, or Presbyterianism.  The church is governed first and foremost by the Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, our only rule to direct us how we may glorify God and enjoy Him forever.  Per the New Testament, the Session is always a plurality of elders composed of the pastor and ruling elders who have equal vote in all matters.  Next to the Bible, we hold to the 1788 American Revisions of the 1647 Westminster Confession of Faith and the original Larger and Shorter Catechisms (https://opc.org/confessions.html).  Our Book of Church Order (BCO) is our tertiary standard which includes a Form of Government (FOG), Book of Discipline (BOD), and Directory for the Public Worship of God (DPW) (https://opc.org/order.html).

History

Emmanuel OPC Church began as a mission work of Reformation Church in May 2014.  The week after Reformation Church moved from Castle Rock CO into their new building in Elizabeth CO, Emmanuel OPC held her first services in Castle Rock led by Licentiate & Ruling Elder Mike Chapa.  Ruling Elder Jim Mill joined Mike from Reformation to help plant the new church.  Reformation Church of Elizabeth has since left the OPC.

The Presbytery of the Dakotas recognized Emmanuel OPC as an organized/particular congregation in Apr 2015.  Mike finished his M. Div. and completed Presbytery ordination exams that summer.  In Oct 2015, Mike was installed as a Teaching Elder after accepting a call from Emmanuel OPC to be their first pastor.  From the spring of 2018 to the spring of 2020, Pastor Chapa also served as the Moderator of the Presbytery of the Dakotas.  Pastor Chapa resigned 10 May 2020 for personal reasons and a pastoral search is underway.

The church has met in Clear Sky Elementary School during her entire history.  The other ruling elders now include Scott Allen (Clerk of Session), Gerald Stanton, and George Young (Moderator of Session).  Ruling Elder Scott Allen also serves as the Diaconal Chair for the Presbytery of the Dakotas and leads weekly worship at an assisted living facility.
